Material Parameters to Confirm Before Requesting a CNC Quote
Before requesting a CNC machining quotation, confirm the material grade, applicable standard, supply form, and any hardness or heat-treatment condition. This article explains which material parameters matter and which ones are verified per order.
The Short Answer
The material parameters that matter before a CNC quote are: the grade (not just the material family), the standard it should comply with, the supply form (bar, plate, forging, casting), and any required condition such as hardness or heat treatment. "Aluminum" or "stainless steel" alone is not enough to price a part.
Different grades within the same family differ in machinability, strength, corrosion resistance, and price — and therefore in both machining cost and raw material cost.
Why Grade and Standard Matter
A grade designation tells the machinist what the material is; a standard tells everyone how its composition and properties are verified. Grade naming systems differ between regions, so stating both the grade and the standard you reference avoids substitution disputes later.
If your part must meet a specific industry or customer standard, name it in the inquiry. If you only need a functional equivalent, say that too — it gives the supply side room to propose available grades.
- Grade designation, for example within the aluminum or stainless steel families.
- Referenced standard, where compliance is required.
- Whether an equivalent grade is acceptable.
Common Material Groups and What to Specify
For aluminum, specify the alloy series and temper where relevant, since strength and machinability vary widely between alloys. For stainless steel, state the grade family you need — corrosion resistance requirements differ between applications and drive grade choice.
For carbon steel, indicate whether strength, weldability, or machinability is the priority. For copper and brass, clarify whether electrical conductivity or machining ease matters more. For engineering plastics, name the resin — POM, nylon, PEEK, and others behave very differently in machining and in service.
Supply Form and Condition
The same grade is supplied as bar, plate, forging, or casting, and the starting form affects both price and machining time. A near-net forging may cut machining hours compared with solid bar, but requires its own sourcing. State if you have a required starting form; otherwise the manufacturing side will propose one.
Condition requirements — hardness ranges, heat treatment before or after machining, stress relieving — should be stated in the inquiry because they add process steps and cost. These are confirmed per order, including at which production stage they are applied.
What Is Confirmed Per Order
Actual material availability, mill source, and the types of material certificates or test reports that can accompany the order are confirmed per inquiry. Where the supplying factory can provide material certificates, a sourcing partner can coordinate them with the order — but the available document types should be agreed before production, not assumed afterward.
If your end customer requires traceable documentation, raise this requirement at the inquiry stage so it is priced and planned into the order.
